Reasons For Bleeding Gums

If you are brushing your teeth and you see that there is some pink mixed in with the toothpaste you spit out, then this is some blood. More than likely, that blood is coming from your gums. You may also taste a small amount of blood as you are flossing your teeth. There are many reasons why your gums may bleed, but bleeding gums should always be taken as a sign that you need to visit the dentist. Here are some reasons it may be happening to you.

You might have scraped your gums

There is the chance that you may have scraped your gums and brushing them is causing blood to come from the scrape. See if you have tenderness from any part of your gums and think back to if you ate something that may have scratched them.

You might not be taking good care of your teeth

If you aren't brushing at least twice a day for at least two minutes and flossing after you eat, then this can cause your gums to become swollen. Swollen gums will be more apt to bleeding than ones that aren't swollen. It's also important to note that swollen gums are the very beginning signs of gingivitis. Start doing a better job of caring for your teeth and if the bleeding continues then get in to see the dentist.

Your medication can be causing your bleeding gums

If you are on a medication that thins your blood, then it will be easier for you to end up with them bleeding when you brush. When you see your dentist, be sure to mention the medications you are taking, so they can determine if this is indeed the reason.

Pregnancy can cause bleeding gums

Hormones change during pregnancy and those changes can lead to the swelling of your gums and therefore cause them to bleed when you are brushing them. The good news is if your bleeding gums are caused by pregnancy, it normally clears up on its own after you give birth. You want the dentist to determine if this is really the reason for your bleeding teeth.

You may have gingivitis or gum disease

The first thing you will notice with gingivitis is swollen gums that may bleed and that are brighter in color. If not treated properly, it will turn into gum disease that causes pain and worsening of your other symptoms. It can eventually lead to you losing your teeth, so proper treatment is important.
